EU TO BAN SINGLE-USE PLASTIC

The European Parliament recently voted to ban the use of disposable plastic products from the 2021 in an effort to curb the growing pollution of the sea and the environment from plastic waste.

Disposable plastic articles such as plastic tableware, thin plastic bags, plastic cotton swabs and straws can be seen everywhere in daily life. With the pursuit of convenient life style and the development of tourism, the use of disposable plastic articles has become more and more common As a result, the pollution of the environment and the oceans is increasing. According to the EU statistics, plastic waste accounts for as much as 85% of all waste, about half of which is a disposable product. Less than a third of plastic waste is collected and reused, and most of the rest remains in landfills or in the environment. Plastic breaks down very slowly, especially when it accumulates in the ocean and on beaches, posing a hazard to birds, fish and other marine animals. Animal feed plastic residue through the food chain feedback, will return to the table, on human health hazards.

In May, the European Commission submitted a proposal to control plastic waste, hoping to ban the use of disposable plastic items such as cutlery. According to the latest proposal approved by the European Parliament, from the 2021, the EU will ban the production and sale of disposable plastic products such as tableware, COTTON SWABS AND STRAWS These supplies will be replaced by paper, Straw, or reusable hard plastics. Plastic bottles will be collected separately according to existing recycling models; member states will be required to recover 90 per cent of all plastic bottles once by 2025.
